OFF-STREET PARKING?

Yes, and… I work out of town, and I usually stay in Columbus only on weekends. When I’m staying in Columbus, I will park my car in the garage. I’m happy for you to park in the driveway when I’m not staying in Columbus. In semi-related news, you’re welcome to use my partner’s bicycle when he’s not using it.

I’m less than a mile from the Miller-Kelton ramps on I-70, and it’s easy to access I-71 that way or via Parsons/Main. It’s a 10-12 minute drive to CMH airport via Nelson Rd. and I-670 (8 miles), and OSU’s main campus is about 6 miles away depending upon which route you take.

The Deshler Park neighborhood, where I live, is adjacent Driving Park, Franklin Park / Olde Town East to the north, Berwick and Bexley to the east, and Old Oaks / Southern Orchards to the west. German Village is fewer than 2 miles away, and it’s just a 6-minute bike ride to an excellent small bookstore / vegan brunch spot on Parsons Ave, Two Dollar Radio HQ. It’s a ten-minute bike ride to my favorite backyard patio, Club Diversity on South High street. Some great restaurants nearby: Commune, Barcelona, Lindey’s, Chapmans.

Within walking distance are a bunch of smaller neighborhood parks and community gardens, Southside Family Farms, Fairwood Park, Driving Park Pool and Recreation Center, and the CPL Driving Park Branch. There’s a convenience store around the corner and shopping plazas with gas, groceries, post office, and takeout places a few blocks south.

I’m dee (short for darren lee), and my pronouns are they/them/theirs. I’m a middle-aged, left-leaning, queer person. My friends describe me as earnest, caring, curious, and smart (and maybe also a bit of a smart-ass). They also say I’m active, outdoorsy, youthful. I’m fortunate to be able-bodied and handy, often doing DIY projects. I sing with the Harmony Project, and I’m engaged in local politics and service organizations that work toward social justice. I am a visual artist, and you can click on any of the site headings above (or here, like BIO or ARTWORK or WRITING, etc…) to learn more about me, what I care about, and what I do.

WHAT AM I LIKE TO LIVE WITH?

My previous long-term housemates have become some of my closest friends, like family. That you and I should develop such deep familiarity is not a prerequisite, but I’m certainly open to it. I have a lot of gratitude for the amazing people in my life, and if we live together then you’ll get to know all my ride-or-dies. I love gardening, cycling, canoeing, reading, and listening to new music. My art studio, tools/workshop, and seed-starting set-up for spring planting are all located in the basement. I’ve already done quite a bit of home improvements and landscaping.

On a more practical, day-to-day level – since I work in Athens, OH – we will only be sharing space for a few days a week. You will have the house to yourself most of the time. I’m quiet and tidy. You and I will get along best when we both keep the shared spaces neat and clean, especially the kitchen and bathrooms. We can devise a mutually agreeable, informal system for equitably sharing the housekeeping responsibilities, and you will not be expected to help with any yard work or home improvement projects (though if that’s your jam, just let me know). I will ask you to compost your vegetable scraps and egg shells, so if you’re unfamiliar then I’ll show you how it’s done.

I’m also thrifty and conscious of the environment, so I prefer to conserve energy by opening a window and turning on a fan instead of cranking the AC, or putting on a sweater or snuggling under a blanket while I’m reading rather than turning up the heat too much. On-time rent payment, cleaning up after ourselves, and maintaining open communication will be essential to the health of our housemate relationship.

Want to host OVERNIGHT guests?

There’s a guest bedroom and either of us may host infrequent overnight visitors in that space with advanced notice.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION

I’m in a long-distance relationship. My partner and I are apart for a few weeks, and then we cohabitate for a few weeks. When he’s in Columbus, the lower level becomes his office where he works remotely alongside me in my basement studio. In other words, during the days when we are in Columbus you would be sharing space with both of us; and conversely, you would have the house to yourself when I’m with him in Athens or San Juan.

WHAT’S THE NEIGHBORHOOD LIKE?

My house is on the southeast side of Columbus adjacent the little Deshler Park – so I only have neighbors on one side. It’s usually very quiet, especially in the mornings, though I can hear traffic on Lockbourne and Whittier. Sometimes my middle-aged neighbor sits in the car in the driveway adjacent my house and plays loud music, and other times not. It’s a largely working-class, Black community, and most of my neighbors have owned their homes for decades. People here are open, kind, and helpful. Officially, we’re within the boundaries of the Deshler Park Civic Association, where I serve as treasurer. We’re just beginning to cook-up some ideas for future neighborhood improvements and public arts projects.

In this post I take the opportunity to engage AI in a conversation about 1,000 Miles Per Hour, an exhibition I co-curated in 2022 for Ohio’s FotoFocus Biennial. Our back and forth considers how history can help us imagine more just and sustainable futures. and concludes by turning the same questions toward AI itself.

Dawit L. Petros is a visual artist, researcher and educator. Throughout the past decade, he has focused on a critical re-reading of the entanglements between colonialism and modernity. These concerns derive from lived experiences: Petros is an Eritrean emigrant who spent formative years in Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Kenya before settling in central Canada.
